Chelan County Public Works wants to make you aware of a recent change at the Dryden Transfer Station that was brought about by state law. State law prohibits plant material – tree limbs and clippings, brush, grass, etc. – from leaving apple maggot quarantine areas.
The Dryden Transfer Station is located in a pest-free area; however, much of western Chelan County, including Leavenworth, Plain and Lake Wenatchee, is located in an apple maggot quarantine area. The apple maggot is a pest that threatens Washington’s apple industry, as well as many of our other fruit crops. More information about apple maggots is available on the Washington State Department of Agriculture website.
The Dryden Transfer Station will no longer accept plant material taken from an apple maggot quarantine area. As a business owner or resident, you are responsible for knowing where the quarantine boundaries are so you do not transport plant waste from a quarantine area to a pest-free area. A map of the quarantine area is available on our website. The Washington State Department of Agriculture’s website also has a searchable map to determine if a specific address is inside or outside the apple maggot quarantine area.
Plant material from a quarantine area must be disposed of in the quarantine area. Compost or destroy the waste at your home or take it to a disposal facility within the quarantine area.
