Code Compliance
The Code Compliance division addresses city ordinances and codes as they relate to the health, safety and general quality of life concerns of our residents, neighborhoods, and community.
Due to the desire to encourage individual accountability within the community, the Department does not “police” activity; Rather, the Department has a terraced system with levels of enforcement for efficient and effective prioritization and timely responses.
Code Compliance Process:
The Code Compliance process is dependent on which category the complaint falls under. Depending on the category, inspection times and follow-up varies. Your concerns are important to us. We will assign priority to life and safety issues first as we work through complaints.
More information regarding the City’s Standard Operating Procedures for Enforcement Action can be found in Resolution 7-2012.
How to Submit a Code Complaint:
- Complete the Code Violation Investigation Form, and submit in-person at City Hall, by mail, or via email to Community Development Staff.
- File an electronic Citizen Complaint through the City’s website.
- To report a known or suspected short-term rental (STR) within city limits, call the STR hotline at (509) 436-7360. This is for STR complaints only – no other complaint types can be submitted through the hotline.
You may request Code Enforcement service if you suspect a code violation on private property. Your contact information is required so we may connect with you regarding the status of the investigation and any questions.
Your identity is kept confidential by Code Enforcement staff, to the maximum extent allowed by law; we are unable to take anonymous complaints.
Together we can maintain a great community.
