At this time of year, bears are in search of one thing: FOOD. And with a nose that can detect smells from a mile away, they will look for the easiest source of sustenance—which might be your garbage container.

Let’s be BearWise this spring and remove attractants before a black bear finds them first.

  • Put away trash, recycling, and compost bins (or use a bear-resistant container)
  • Bring in bird feeders during the spring and fall
  • Keep pet food indoors
  • Clean and store outdoor grills after every use
  • Do not feed or approach a black bear

When a black bear learns to rely on a man-made food source (i.e., trash), it can put both you and the bear at risk. Let’s keep our local wildlife wild and our community safe by practicing these BearWise strategies this spring.
