Since the City Council decided to close a portion of Front Street indefinitely in 2022, the City has pursued various options to upgrade the existing orange barricades at various intersections in the downtown core. Barricades are essential for public safety and to prevent potential vehicular and pedestrian conflicts.
We would like to take this opportunity to inform you of the upcoming changes to the Front Street pedestrian Plaza. The City is now working towards implementing additional public safety traffic enhancements in the downtown core (e.g., Front Street and 8th Street) by installing permanent bollards at specific roadway access points. The proposed bollards will replace the orange barricades currently in use.
Beginning on Monday, September 16, portions of Front Street will be pedestrian access only after 11:00 a.m. Bollards will prohibit vehicular access to Front Street’s pedestrian plaza after 11:00 a.m. See the attached Public Safety Traffic Enhancements Map with proposed bollard locations.
Delivery vehicles will be able to access the loading zones on 8th Street, 9th Street, and Hwy 2. See the attached Loading Zone Map. Front Street’s pedestrian plaza will be open daily to delivery vehicles from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. These changes will soon be reflected in the Leavenworth Municipal Code 10.08.010. Vehicles in violation of 10.080.010 will be subject to fines.
