As we get ready to reopen the pool tomorrow (hooray!), we’d like to say what many of you may be thinking, “What is an AFR?” and “Why does the pool keep closing due to them?”.
An AFR, or accidental fecal release, is a term used to describe an incident where fecal matter (aka poop) is released into the pool water. Also known as “code brown”. The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has two main types of AFRs:
1. Formed fecal matter (solid poop) – poses a risk for spreading germs such as Giardia.
2. Diarrheal – carries a higher risk because it may contain Cryptosporidium (Crypto), an extremely chlorine-tolerant parasite.
Both types pose serious public health concerns because they can introduce harmful pathogens into the water, increasing the risk of recreational water illnesses. When a fecal incident occurs, we must follow strict health guidelines to ensure the water is safe before we allow anyone back in the pool.
AFR related closures are a bummer for everyone. Not only do they create health and safety concerns, they also have significant and negative impacts on our summer pool season, including:
* Swim lesson participants lose sessions.
* Swim team forgoes valuable practice hours.
* Pool patrons lose access to lap swim or water exercise.
* Pool staff miss out on working hours.
* There’s one less spot to cool down when it’s hot out.
So, what’s the solution? We have a Swim Diaper Policy in place, Pool Staff call for 5-minute bathroom breaks every hour during open swim, and we are continuing to explore ways to decrease closure times following an AFR incident.
The CDC encourages pool users to follow these recommendations:
* Don’t pee or poop in the pool.
* Stay out of the pool if you have, or recently suffered from, diarrhea.
* Take regular bathroom breaks.
* Check swim diapers frequently and change diapers away from the pool.
* Don’t swallow the pool water.
