Did you know that chip sealing applies a special protective surface to our roads? We lay down a sticky surface and cover it with small rock chips. Traffic then pushes these into the road, creating a protective layer. It’s a cost-effective way to extend the life of our roadways!

Reminder: Please drive slowly (20 mph or less) on newly chip-sealed roads for several days. Loose gravel will be present until the road is swept 3-7 days after the scrub seal. Bicyclists, motorcyclists, pedestrians, rollerbladers, and those with strollers – please use caution!

Next up, our contractor will apply a final layer called a fog seal. This light application of diluted asphalt emulsion offers several benefits:

  • Protects the pavement from moisture
  • Shields the pavement from oxidation
  • Extends pavement life
  • Delays major maintenance needs
  • Enhances color contrast between pavement and striping

Important: Do not walk or drive on a fog-sealed road until it has reopened. The sealant will stick to tires, shoes, feet, paws, etc., if not fully dried.

Accidental Contact? If you get fog seal on your vehicle or clothing, wash it off immediately with soap and water. If it has dried, use a spot remover like Goo Gone or Contractor’s Solvent. Generally, it can be wiped off easily, but avoid scrubbing.

Why do we chip seal? Chip sealing isn’t a magic fix for road repair, but it offers several key benefits:

  • Protects the Pavement: Acts as a waterproof barrier, shielding the road base from water damage, which is a major cause of cracks and potholes.
  • Safety Benefits: The embedded chips create a textured surface, enhancing traction for vehicles, especially in wet weather. It also provides an anti-glare surface during rainy conditions.
  • Cost-Effective: Compared to complete road repaving, chip sealing is a much more affordable way to extend a road’s lifespan by several years.

Not only does chip sealing preserve our road surfaces, but it also improves traveler safety. The protective coat restores traction to prevent skidding, particularly on wet roads, and enhances visibility with its anti-glare properties.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience as we work to improve our city’s infrastructure!
