Chelan County to conduct permitted burn at its Leavenworth brush drop-off site
LEAVENWORTH – Chelan County Public Works will be conducting a permitted burn at its county-owned property at the intersection of East Leavenworth and Icicle roads.
The burn is permitted by the Washington State Department of Ecology. The material to be burned is green waste collected at the county’s Leavenworth brush drop-off site that was dropped off by residents living in the unincorporated area of Chelan County’s Apple Maggot Quarantine Area.
The county crew will be monitoring the weather, including any air stagnation warnings, and onsite ground conditions to determine the optimal time window for the burn. At this time, crews are hoping to complete the work during the week of April 15. However, plans are highly weather dependent.
Once a burn date is confirmed, a public service announcement will be issued by the county to notify the public 24 hours before ignition. The announcement will be sent out on the solid waste Listserv and to local media outlets. It also will be posted to the:
- Chelan County website (www.co.chelan.wa.us)
- Chelan County Public Works Facebook page (Chelan County Public Works)
- Chelan County Public Works Twitter page (Chelan Public Works)
This is the second attempt since the fall to burn the material at the Leavenworth site. The burn, originally scheduled for last October, was postponed because weather and air conditions were not suitable for the burning of the brush. Properties around the Leavenworth site, as well as the City of Leavenworth and the local fire district, have been notified of the upcoming burn.
State law prohibits brush from a quarantine area to leave a quarantine area. The Leavenworth site was opened in 2017 to accommodate those citizens and businesses living and working in the quarantine area of Chelan County, which includes much of the Leavenworth, Plain and Lake Wenatchee areas. The Leavenworth brush drop-off site is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays.
