Free shredded wood chips available
Chips from Leavenworth site must be applied in Apple Maggot Quarantine Zone

LEAVENWORTH – Free shredded wood chips are available at the county’s Leavenworth brush drop-off site for application within the Apple Maggot Quarantine Area of Chelan County.

The chipped product was made from brush dropped off at the Leavenworth site by people living in the quarantine area, which covers much of western Chelan County, including Leavenworth, Plain and Lake Wenatchee. The wood chips cannot be transferred out of the quarantine area or used in a pest-free zone.

To determine if you live in the Apple Maggot Quarantine Area, visit the Washington State Department of Agriculture’s Interactive Apple Maggot Quarantine Map.

The material is available 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays at the Leavenworth pit, which is at the intersection of East Leavenworth and Icicle roads. It should be available for about a month.

The shredded wood varies from 3 to 7 inches in size. It is a good source of moisture retention and ground cover for yard plants and garden beds. It can be used to protect plants in the fall when temperatures get cooler. The material also can be used in compost.

People interested in the shredded wood chips will need to load the product themselves. So bring a shovel, gloves and any other necessities. Trailers are also welcome. The county will provide a loader to help with loading large trailers or trucks on July 26 and August 2 at the Leavenworth site.

The shredded wood chip material is available in the condition AS IS. Chelan County is not liable for the shredded wood chip material and is not responsible for the material once it is removed from the Leavenworth pit. The shredded wood chip material may contain hawthorn tree remnants and is not certified weed free.

For those people wanting mulch for application outside of the quarantine area (in the pest-free zone), free shredded wood chips are available at the Dryden Transfer Station, 9073 Highway 2 in Dryden. The transfer station is open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
