PSA FROM CHELAN COUNTY: The county-owned, drop-off brush site on Icicle and East Leavenworth roads will be open two Fridays a month for the foreseeable future.
The site will be open the second and fourth Fridays of the month through October, with dates this month set for June 14 and June 28. Hours will not change; the site is open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $25 a cubic yard, or a $25 minimum payment.
The decision to move from weekly hours to bi-weekly is based on costs. The facility is not breaking even but rather costing money to operate, said Eric Pierson, director of Chelan County Public Works.
“Our numbers show we are averaging about two customers an hour, with one customer an hour last week,” Pierson said. “That means our revenues are not covering our costs, including staff time and the hauling of the brush away for composting. While we raised fees this year, we don’t want to keep pushing those costs onto users.”
Pierson added that more people may be utilizing nearby Winton Manufacturing, which takes yard waste for compost. Winton Mfg. is open six days a week at $15 for loads under 400 pounds.
Future dates of the Chelan County site include: July 12, July 26, Aug. 9, Aug. 23, Sept. 13, Sept. 27, Oct. 11 and Oct. 25.
